The purpose of this thesis is to reform the structure of knowledge which happens in modern space of colony and to examine the modern intellectual’s motive of studying abroad centering around Mirok Lee’s <Der Yalu Flieβt>. For the focus of this discussion, let’s leave the valuation about the character’s consciousness and behavior and discuss only reaction aspect about character’s western knowledge. This will help to clear up the intellectual’s system of thought about the western modern knowledge which is translated by Japan in the colony age.
When western schools-the educational institution of modern sciences-established, the traditional education run by seodang declined and reforming of the structure of knowledge started. It was not the education of Korean, by Korean, but the education of Korean by Japanese or Westerner. The traditional education run by seodang alternated to western schools because it couldn’t produce and deliver the new knowledge of changing period. By measuring the traditional knowledge’s strength with the western knowledge’s, superior position of western knowledge meant subordination of traditional knowledge, those two reformed as the upper and lower sides.
It was Japanese who taught the western modern sciences. The supply system of western knowledge through Japanese who were lack of it become the limitation of colony education. The colony intellectuals who were dissatisfied with Japanese education desired not the indirect learning of western knowledge through Japan’s translation, but the direct experience of that. The discussion of studying abroad -occurred with the belief of individual’s successful entry of public affairs and independence of homeland by learning western knowledge correctly-ruled the period and was popular.
