This study is to find planning logic of town construction in Chosun Dynasty. For this purpose, following 3 subject will be examined by step up process.
1. Figure out and symbolize the spatial concept based on oriental philosophy.
2. Find characteristics of traditional geographical philosophy from unique topology and topology itself in Korea. And then, make out the principle of spatial construction by combining those characteristics with spatial concept extracted from subject 1.
3. Evaluate principles of spatial construction suggested previous steps through empirical study with Eup, basic administrative district in Chosun Dynasty.
As the first part in the whole study, this paper is to establish the spatial concept through the Book of Changes, the Ying-Yang, and the Five elements.
The results are as follows.
First, The spatial concept based on the Book of Changes has the two theoretical concepts. One is the vertical spatial system of Heaven - Man - Earth, and the other is the domanial concept composed of center and periphery.
Second, The philosophy of the Five Elements embodies the periphery to the direction concept. In such a spatial thought, the concept of regular position is included also.
Third, The concept of regular position greatly affected on our traditional construction spaces in philosophical aspect.
Future study is to prove those spatial concepts should be a our traditional construction principle in philosophical aspect.
