The purpose of this paper is restructuring of the 'Korean Traditional Spatial Diagram’ by combining the Korean domestic characteristics with the spatial concept based on ‘the Book of Changes’, ‘the Ying-Yang’, and ‘the Five Elements’.
The items considered as domestic characteristics are the topography of whole-nation and the geographical concept inherited. Korean unique construction principles related to domestic characteristics are summarized as the location of building in front of mountain, the visual limitation of residential area and the orientation toward the mountain.
The changes that have happened in process of combining the traditional space concepts based on the oriental philosophy with Korean unique construction principles are as follows.
1. As the path between heaven and man, the mountain is selected. And it is represented as the guardian mountain(鎭山ㆍ主山) in the residential area.
2. The ‘four sides concept’ in the periphery is recognized spatially with mountains.
3. As the settlement area is limited visually by mountains in the edge, the sense of place is recognized more clearly.
4. As the target of orientation, the mountain substituted for sun.
In the following study, the spatial diagram in this paper will be verified as a ‘Traditional Construction Conceptual Diagram in Korea’ through the case study.
