The year 1989 was a turning point in the Japanese curriculum of history, when the Handbook for Learning and Teaching was issued. By the handbook, the subject of history was isolated from the other social studies in the high school curriculum, and the history in social studies subject was fixed in the middle school.
The objectives in the national history teaching are differentiated according to the classes. In the primary school, the pupils learn the historical figures famous in the Japanese history in order to have patriotism and identity. In the middle school, the objective is to understand the relationships between the foreign countries and Japan and to promote the historical piety. In the high school, the disciplinary specialities and principles are introduced into the history subjects, but the Japanese characters are also emphasized.
One of the main topics in Japanese education is the international relationship. This topic also contributes to the growth of Japanese economy. Because it is necessary to understand the foreign cultures in order to maintain the economic hegemony in the world.
In sum, the Japanese aim of history education is essentially to promote the patriotism on the bases of systematic national curricula reflecting the abilities of the pupils.
