The minyo (literally, folk song) of Korea has been transmitted through the minjung (the mass), who created, transmitted, and reproduced the songs. However, because of the change of the traditional society to a modern industrial one, the mass has changed to the taejung (the general public). The populace of the modern society no longer assumes the role of the producer or transmitter of minyo but rather became the appreciator of minyo. This transformation, however, does not indicate that the minyo has a large number of audiences. Today, minyo is generally regarded as obsolete traditional music that has a weak connection with the everyday life of the populace.
In this paper, the author examines five popular songs that all borrowed the melody of the minyo 〈Paennorae.〉 The songs analyzed ate : 〈Paennorae〉 sung by Kim Ok-shim, Kim Serena, the Keyboys, 〈Paennori〉 by DJ DOC, and 〈Paennorae〉 by Kim Yong-u. These songs ate recreated as modern minyo using the form and style of popular music and Western music elements. Each of the songs offered a transformed minyo to the populace that is approachable and that employs different kinds of structure, musical instruments, vocal style, rhythm, and developed melody, all of which reflect the singers' ideas of blending tradition and modernity.
Minyo needs to be recreated to march modern time and to appeal to a wider audience. However, the popularization of minyo should not be equated with degradation of the songs' quality or commercialization with a negative connotation. Despite the changed nature of minyo and the musical transformations of traditional minyo in the process of re-creating or adopting it into a popular song, the contribution of these songs should be recognized. The examples examined in this paper provide a means for the populace today to accept and appreciate minyo in one's daily life.
