Kangkangsullae is a playing song distributed along western and southern coast of Korea. There are over 34 kinds of Kangkangsullae Busunoliyo that have been discovered and researched up to present time. There are over 40 kinds of Kangkangsullae Busunoliyo if we count those whose name and play way are changed though the form is similar among these. There are various existences of Kangkangsullae in their kind and distribution in accordance with their origin and the meaning attached to Kangkangsullae also appears in different manners according to their origin. Therefore, in this article, we will look into the regional distributions and kinds of Kangkangsullae Busunoliyo and attempt to arrange how they came to be formed in musical context.
There are four types of musical characteristics of Busunoliyo. The first is the kind that only changes the words while attaining all the musical characteristics of Jajin-Kangkangsullae. The second is the kind that retains the musical characteristics of Kangkangsullae with changed forms such as omitting the receiving song and changing the length of the song as well as intermix the songs of Kangkangsullae with other type of songs. The third is the kind that accepted the other genre of music into the Noliyo of Kangkangsullae. Notable examples of this kind are Kaegoritaryung that accepted Sadangpaesori and Kama that accepted the Kwonmasung [勸馬聲] of gamakkun, palankeen bearer. The last, fourth, is the kind that Gachangyouheeyo (a kind of singing) has changed its function into Dongjakyouheeyo (a kind of dancing). Examples are Dungdangaetayung and Jindo Arirang.
Most of Busunoliyo is transformed from Jajin-Kangkangsullae. In particular, we can learn that when changing the words of receiving song, the identity of the song changes and it functions as an independent piece of song. The creation of Kangkangsullae Busunoliyo can be explained as follows: Making changes in the words without altering musical element significantly, creating new piece of song through altering the rhythm and form, and accepting the music of other genre and Yuheeyo songs into play songs.
