The Purpose of this thesis is to research the mutual relation between the principle of movement and the aesthetic characteristic in Korean tradional dance.
Basically, a dance is consist of two different type of facter, one is the movement itself and the other is the sentiment which can cause the movement.
So dance is organized as such, one can expect the binary structure should has two different principle of movement and the aesthetic characteristic in Korean traditional dance.
But the Korean traditional dance is united the two monistically.
The aesthetic character 'Jeong-Jung-Dong' is also the principle of movement in Korean traditional dance.
The glossary meaning of 'Jeong-Jung-Dong' is as follows, which a great chinese scholar, Chui Keun - Dam, gave a definition.
If the silence is among silence
it is not real silence.
If the pleasure is among moving
it is not real pleasure.
Pleasure follows pain
To try examining pleasure,
It is teal function between mind and body.
Basing on that meaning, I described the aesthetic character and monistic meaning of 'Jeong-Jung-Dong' in comparison with the oriental philosophy.
In conclusion, 'Jeong-Jung-Dong' assumes a quiet form of dance, implies the possible beauty in the harmony and discord of 'Jeong' and 'Dong' and there 'Jung' is the fundamental element which harmonizes the both limits.
