The study examined the background of transmission and the characteristics of characters of the Seongjae Legend around Seongjae where battles against the Japanese Army took place during the invasion of Japan in 1592.
We suggested narrative structure related to the real historical figure Gwon Jong and fictional character Jo Heon in the Seongjae Legend among legends related to battles against the Japanese invaders in the Geumsan area, and mentioned the differences. In addition, as for the background of the legend, the story originated from the battle for the Japanese Army to remove the risk of diversion by the Chosun Navy and the patriotic soldiers and to occupy Jolla Province for smooth transportation of supplies and self sufficing. The two heroes Gwon Jong and Jo Heon died in Geumsan during the war with Japan. However, various evidences and situation have led people to recognize Jo Heon as a person from Geumsan more than Gwon Jong.
The heroes of the Seongjae Legend suggest abilities required to capable leaders such as a strong sense of responsibility, uprightness, affection for people and foresight to look ahead. In addition, unquiet ghost of the woman explains is a narrative means of explaining the heroes’ strong abilities and the understandable reasons for defeat and at the same time emphasizes the importance of women the weak.
As presented above, this study examined the background of the formation and the characteristics of the characters of the Seongjae Legend. In order to investigate people’s consciousness against Japan in the Geumsan area, it is necessary to study extensive written and oral traditions including the battle at the Geumsan Wall.
