There are About 130 folktales related to ‘To-Jung Lee Ji-Ham(토정 이지함)’ who lived in Jo-Sun Dynasty. To-Jung in the folktales has various personality. For example, he could predict, he could see the value of a person and he could do magic. Also, he took care of people very well, he was very thrifty, he did control himself well, and he adapted to his destiny.
There are some senses of people in these folktales.
The first, we can see that people longed for a special person in the folktales. The special person solved the people’s problem and made people have a dream and hope.
The second, we can see that people wanted a person to honor themselves in these folktales. Because many officers gave people pain in Cho-Sen Dynasty, people really hoped for a good officer to appear and to lead themselves.
The third, we can see that To-Jung thought thrift and restraint very importantly. People complained about the luxurious life of the nobility(양반) without looking after people. So people liked to tell To-Jung’s folktales each other.
The forth, we can see that To-Jung adapted to his destiny. Even though he had very special ability just like magic, he lived poorly and he didn’t do anything for his sons. Also, he didn’t escaped from his death, even though he knew that somebody would kill him.
The folktale of To-Jung is deeply concerned with the old novel 「Im-Jin-Rok(임진록)」 and the modem novel 「So-Sul To-Jung-Bi-Gyul(소설 토정비결)」. Specally, this has many stories about To-Jung and remade the story to be related to To-Jung and persons in the same period. In this novel, the author wrote his monastic life and the proceed of To-Jung’s writing 「To-Jung-Bi-Gyul(토정비결)」 very dynamically.

Also, the folktale of To-Jung seems to make people thrifty and to make them adapt to their destiny. As this folktale was remade in 「So-Sul To-Jung-Bi-Gyul」 by a novelist Lee Je-Woon, this folktale made readers who read modem novels recreat an image of a historical person, To-Jung.
