The increased interest in folktales in the first half of the 19th century was neither a literary answer to the dry fashion-literature in those days nor a pure wish for the new German literature. It involves rather a political expectation of that time. Civic discussions on the formation of a nation state and the People's strong desire for “the great Germania” demanded that literary scholars postulate and prove the common Germanic past in its original history.
For these results, words of common people from their mouth could also be very helpful. Most of their texts that held for the recollection-rests of the heathen-Germanic past time had been delivered orally through many generations.
Those literary texts were regarded randomly as ‘German.’ Some of the qualified researchers began collecting the people's property, sometimes in cooperation with themselves, sometimes with aids of transmitting storytellers. Besides, the desk-empiricists proceeded with their work at random in the mixture of numerous written and few oral sources from the most different provenance, unconcerned about the often miserable everyday environment of the lower classes and their cultural property and desire. Particularly the linguistic patrimony of the people became degenerated largely by high-German literary decoration. Probably the empiric technology researchers were regulated by preconceived ideas and by suggestive questions; the scientific method of the desk researchers is to be called largely as ahistorical. So, the folktale collections are distrustful of ideology in the aspect of their intention and suspicious of falsification in the aspect of their contents.
The results of the folktale research of that time found a wide application as a literary works of folktale in the school education of the century. Meanwhile, the current folktale research have to considerate carefully, which source value of it still wants to grant to the later collections.
It would also be useful to examine which relations existed between people's culture and literary learned society in a certain historic-political area.
