This study analyzes quantitative data, acquired by mail-out questionnaire survey to evaluate the professional architects' perception regarding architectural knowledge in need within the context of professional practice. One hundred questionnaires were distributed to architects/architectural designers in ten large architectural design firms. The return rate was 83 percent. The architectural subjects, provided by architectural schools, were categorized by history/environment/behavior, technology, professional practice, and architectural design. The survey data were sorted by utilizing three categories, including intern group(1-4 years work experiences), experienced group(5-10 years), and managing group(over 11 years). The findings are that: (1) economic motives, under the political-economic production system of capitalism, force architectural profession to be combination between an independent profession and a managing/entrepreneur group; (2) continuous education for professional architects is urgent due mainly to knowledge obsolescence and knowledge gap between educated subjects and subjects in need within professional practice; and (3) criteria judging fitness of architectural subjects need to be revised with practical perspectives responding to the change of business environments. This study was conducted by focusing on the large architectural design firms. With this reason, the research findings may not be applicable to small or medium-sized architectural design firms. Thus, further research is needed to get complete understandings regarding suitable subjects in the professional practice.
