To evaluate the efficacy of Taekwondo poomsae as an aerobic power training mode, Six male Taekwondo black belt practitioners served as subjects participatirg with informed, verbal consent. Subjects were asked to rest quietly for 5-10min before, baseline blood lactate sample were taken. They performed the Taekwondo poomsae(Koryo, Keumgang) repeatedly for 6-8min at a competitive pace that would be used during normal training and actual tournament or demonstration performance of poomsae(pace). at this pace, subjects were asked to complete each Koryo, Keumgang poomsae in approximately 45s. Continuous heartrate measures were recorded throughout the exercise period with recovery period. post-exercise and recovery 3min, finger - tip blood samples were taken and analyzed for lactate. Subject were allowed to rest for 2h before performing the second poomsae protocol(Fast). at this pace, subjects were asked to complete each poomsae(Koryo, Keumgang) in 35s or roughly twice as fast as in the previous PACE protocol(45s). heartrate was treasured continuously for the 8-10min exercise period. Blood lactate levels were asseses immediatly post-ecercisr and 3min post exercise.
%HRmax during the PACE and FAST, Koryo poomsae was 86.3±7.6%(pace), 91.6±5.1%(fast) and Keumgang poomsae was 84.2±7.8%(pace), 83.5±13.5%(fast) of tradmile test HR max. The difference in mean values was significant between Koryo poomsae(fast) and koryo poomsae(pace), Keumgang(fast), Keumgang(pace).
PACE and FAST post-Koryo, keumgang poomsae exercise peak blood lactate were 5.44±0.94m㏖/ℓ(pace), 5.87±1.34m㏖/ℓ (fast), 4.55±1.64m㏖/ℓ(pace), 4.37±2.24m㏖/ℓ(fast).
The difference in mean values was no significant(p>.05)
These data indicate that Taewkondo poomsae can be used as an effective and specific means for training aerobic power in Taekwondo practitioners.
