As far as a medium of literature is a language, literature is usually expressed in its native language. When we discuss the relationship between Korean literature and language the most remarkable thing is the fact that the unification of the written and spoken language in Korea has been only 100 years old. The biggest issue of all among the cultural changes brought by the modernization of Korea is a public use of a Korean language and the recognition of our native language.
In 1886 〈HANSEONG JUBO〉 which used Korean language and Chinese characters together was published and in 1896, 〈DONGLIP SINMUN〉 which used only Korean language was published. The general recognition of a native language made a turning point in establishing a modern country, which was a strong dynamic power for Korean people to elevate the modernization of society.
The population of Korean diaspora all over the world is about 6 million. The Korean diaspora which includes the 3rd or the 4th generations are enjoying the diaspora literature which are written in Korean or in foreign languages.
Korean literature should embrace those diaspora literature in its national literature. The diaspora literature expressed in foreign language should be accepted as our national literature also through translation.
The diaspora literature has the characteristics of pursuing identity of Korean people, pursuing the identity of modern people who are living in a globalized age beyond the nationalism and post colonialism. And it has a passionate literary spirit which includes the consciousness of marginal people. These characteristics would provide the very useful clues for improvement of Korean literature into the world literature.
