This thesis delves into the novel of Hanyang, a cultural journal of Korean residents in Japan first published in 1962. The aim and end of this analysis is what they, Koreans staying in Japan and contemporary intellectuals, intend through Hanyang.
In Hanyang, the character of Korean residents in Japan, often appear to suffer from Japanese thinking of them as lower class people. Sometimes these Koreans are students studying abroad who received terrible treatment undeservedly. Then they feel their circumstances is no more than ‘the other’ who is given by Japanese. So Koreans staying in Japan set a place for discourse in the form of Hanyang.
Secondly, they continually want to discuss their motherland, Korea, through Hanyang. Korean residents in Japan could be rather more outspoken, insightful and critical about Korean ‘Tradition’ because they are Korean but distanced from Korea at the same time. So intellectual residents in Japan began harsh criticism of the Korean conservative literary world in the 1960's, a dispute on what is called ‘tradition theory’. They were free from direct control of Korean literary world as a boundary people between Korean literary circles and Japanese (heterotopia) and they had the medium of discourse, Hanyang. Thanks to that, they continually certify their identity as a Korean under a kind of discussion about ‘tradition’, at the same time they can take a critical attitude to Korean literature and culture objectively. This is the point of ‘tradition’ discourse that Korean residents in Japan maintain representation.
But, it is an oversight that they don't describe Korean real life and don't reflect social conditions in Hanyang. This novel has the merit on the subject of sensitive ‘4?19Revolution’ and to satire Korean society, but it is natural bounds of Korean residents in Japan's novel that hero doesn't show prospects for succession ‘4?19 Revolution’ when he woke up.
As above, releases to name, monthly cultural journal of Korean expatriates. But the early editors are interested to correctly see the Korean situation and present a course of action rather than Korean expatriates practical life. Expecially, consistent discourses on ‘Tradition’ through Hanyang performs in the roll that touch on sensitive identity issues for Korea and bring the then Korean society, ignoring tradition, to attention.
An unusual circumstance of Korean intellectual residents in Japan sticking to tradition as well as actually criticizing and make positive alternative plans. Hanyang has a Korean expatriates place as a medium of discourse and a good cultural journal which has played a critical roll in Korean cultural history and development .
