Matthew was not simply an acceptant and deliverer of the tradition. He was an active theologian and preacher who synthesized dialectically historical issues of the tradition. Matthew engaged in theological task in order to uphold his community which had been excommunicated from union of synagogues. The author of the Gospel reflected the issues of the community in the context of Jesus' time. Through his presentation about Jesus preaching and ministry, Matthew suggested solution for the contemporary problems that his community encountered. The Evangelist made possible for readers to find answers to the problems of the community by the method of Gospel reading.
The primary purpose in the structure of Matthew's Gospel was establishment of Jesus' identity as central locus of the community's faith. The Gospel writer reveals explicitly that Jesus is the son of God. Jesus is both the universal agent of God and the son sent from God and empowered by God' Spirit. Jesus' teaching and ministry were unfolded in strong eschatological tone. He proclaimed the kingdom of heaven, drove out evil spirits, and heal the sick with authority and power given by God.
Jesus‘ authority, teaching, and ministry were commissioned to Matthean community (Chap.10). The community is Jesus' successor. Jesus is identified with the community itself. Therefore the union of synagogues rejected God when they excommunicated Matthean community. Matthew claimed judgment upon them (Chap.22). In addition, Jesus ordered his disciples to go to new realm, i.e., Gentiles rather than to Jews (28: 18-20).
New direction of Matthean community that expelled and separated from synagogues was spiritual firm union with Jesus and the way to Gentiles, not to Jews. The Gospel of Matthew was the theological writing based on 'Survival motif,' which suggested new goals and struggle for survival.
