Gospel according to Mark, known to be the first gospel to be written, tells of an unknown woman who poured perfume on the head of Jesus when he was having a meal at the Simon`s, the leper of Bethany. Jesus said, "I assure you that wherever the gospel is preached, what she has done will be told in memory of her" (Mk. 14:9). Matthew almost repeats the Markan story as Mark tells, but Luke and John distort the story and nowhere mention Jesus` praise of the woman. Luke in fact describes her as a `sinner who poured perfume on Jesus` feet. Church traditions seldom appreciate what the woman did rightly, but mix up the stories of the four gospels and produce a legendary woman who poured expensive perfume on Jesus` feet and wiped them with her hair -a prostitute who by her act of devotion earned Jesus praise and pardon for her manifold sins. It behooves us to explore the history of gospel women which has been obscured and distorted throughout the church history and put it right. Who was the woman that anointed Jesus? What did she in fact do? On the other hand, it would not be right to say after the radical Western feminists that the Luke and John merely distorted the story from the patriachal bias and dismiss it. We ought to look at the distortion from another point of view and give the woman`s act another look from the perspectives of the gospel writers` theology and social situations surrounding the episode. What is required may be a review of the differences and similarities between the reports of the gospel authors, an examination of the texts on the historical -critical basis, and an interpretation, or a reinterpretation of the event from the point of view of social subversion. We may come to conclude therefrom some insights that the event depicts a woman who turns up at a banquet for Jesus about to be betrayed by the Jewish conspiracy in utter disregard of the current usage. that she anoints Jesus on his head. Anointing on the head was an act by prophets of a king`s enthronement. The woman by anointing Jesus on the head led him to walk the road to passion on the cross as the Messiah, declared the crucified Jesus was indeed the Messiah when the so-called disciples were seeking glories completely unaware of the road to passion. She was the only true disciple that prepared the way for the Messiah. The woman who the church traditions condemned as a prostitute was not sinner according to the witness of Lucan gospel. She was a more righteous person than the ungrateful Pharisees who regarded themselves as the righteous. She thanked for the mercy and forgiveness that was given her. She was not only praised by Jesus but was awarded an eschatological gift of peace. John does not mention the praise of Jesus that Mark reports, but describes her as a woman who obeys the Jesus` commands more faithfully than anybody else, whereby fulfilling the role of witness of the revelation of God`s love. She forebodes the act of Jesus by washing his feet even before he shows up the invisible God. The loving act of washing the feet of Jesus brings her to be `one with Jesus; a true disciple of the Lord. Thus we are enabled to see the woman from an entirely new perspective and find a new person who has been wrongly distorted as a sinner. Through her we ought to tell the `gospel to the men today who like the old leaders of the hierarchy reproach the women who prepare the way of the cross, standing in the way for the women to serve the church; witness the true image of the woman wherever the gospel is preached: tell the world how the woman despised and alienated by the Pharisees of old in the patriarchal society of the Jews were recognized by Jesus as righteous; how they performed even more gloriously the duties of the disciples of Jesus than the male disciples. By following the example of the gospel woman, we should put right the road to passion and reveal the true image of invisible God by washing with love the feet of fellow men and women.
