To make computer to process and understand Chinese sentences, the important question is how to let computer get the meanings, i.e. semantic structures, of the sentences processed. Np in sentences are often noun phrases, even complex noun phrases but not just a single noun. Case grammar or valency grammar has no power to deal with noun phrases. The paper firstly made a syntactic analysis of noun phrases, found three types of modifiers of heads in noun phrases, discussed their structural features and grammatical meaning. The paper secondly made an introduction to the research in the slot system of noun phrase of Chinese, which aims at the resolution of the semantic relation between modifiers and head in noun phrases. The paper then probed into and discussed the mapping from various modifier to slots. At last, using the predicate structure raised by G. Leech, the paper characterized the approach to describe the meaning???semantic structure of noun phrases as well as sentences of Chinese with the mapping form modifiers to slots.
