The effects of foliar applications of lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE), a natural lipid, on marketable yield in red pepper (cvs. Bukwang and Nokkwang) and on marketable yield and storability, as expressed by chilling injury, in green pepper (cv. Nokkwang) were investigated. For both cultivars, foliar-spray applications were made in summer season field-grown crops and in winter season greenhouse-grown crops. LPE treatment at 50 ㎎ㆍL?¹ resulted in higher red pepper marketable yield than control. Red pepper marketable yield from plants treated with LPE was similar to that of plants treated with ethephon at 1,000 ㎎ㆍL?¹. Ethephon resulted in discoloration and defoliation of foliage, while LPE had no undesirable side effect. In green pepper, there was no significant difference in marketable yield among the treatments. Harvested green peppers were placed at 4℃ for 2 or 3 weeks and transferred to room temperature. Storability was examined at 4 days after returning to room temperature. Chilling injury, as measured by the percentage of fruit showing pitting and decay, was higher in the control than in the LPE treatment. LPE at 50 ㎎ㆍL?¹ was more effective for inhibiting chilling injury than LPE at 10 ㎎ㆍL?¹.
