Klein showed especially the pregenital-oral and anal-components of oedipal phantasy. She took that as evidence of the early, and pregenital origin of the Oedipus complex. The very early terrifying and psychotic phantasy life of the child lies beneath the Freud's classical Oedipus complex and she emphasized the early stages of the Oedipus complex. The intensity of anxiety and the relevance in children of both sexes led to the discovery of the femininity phase in both boys and girls. Klein's feminine position of early Oedipus complex was important in boys and girls, and was a special anxiety-situation that enhanced the later Oedipal complex, castration anxiety and penis envy described by Freud. The idea of femininity position of girls and boys, characterized by great jealousy, aggression and sadism.
The emphasis on the exploration of mother's body and its contents has lead to a view that Klein minimized the role of father and masculinity. But this is not entirely so. Father is an part-object conceived originally within mother.
Central to the early stages of the Oedipus complex is a combined parent figure. A combined parental imago is the idea of the maternal penis/phallic mother and is the earliest and most primitive phantasy of the oedipal situation.
Riviere showed that women who wish for masculinity may put on a mask of womanliness to avert anxiety and the retribution feared from men(womanliness as a masquerade). She identifies herself with the father(men), and uses the masculinity for her mother(women). She gave woman(mother) phallus she took from man(father). So a woman's object of desire is the other woman.
Woman feels distant form phallic identification and she is a stranger to the phallic, symbolic order(Lacan). Woman's primitive, endogenous homosexuality, encounter with primary femininity show other jouissance, non-phallic jouissance.
Klein's thought did not contradict Freud's views, but underlay them and gave them more meaning.
