This article analyzes the gratitude stories, based on their specific types.
In the first type of the gratitude stories, the spiritual beneficence results in the recompense of property. The beneficent character is a Yangban(兩班) who helps Pyongmin(平民) or Cheonmin(賤民) spiritually, while Pyongmin(平民) or Cheonmin(賤民) is the beneficiary character who gets recompensed materially. The Yangban hero stays away from the material world and is satisfied with his poverty. Yet he still relies upon the gratitude of other people. In that sense, he earns abundant reward by spiritually helping the characters of lower class.
In the second type of the gratitude stories, Yangban himself is in serious poverty. Nonetheless he helps the poor lower class. Although the family members of the Yangban are confronted with severe poverty, the Yangban helps other people first. These stories leave the most strong impression on the readers. In these stories, Yangban teaches ethics of love by treating money as a means to help the needy people.
In the third type, Pyongmin(平民) or Cheonmin(賤民) attains profits by giving something to poor people. This means that the material desire penetrates into the ethical bond between beneficience and reward. In this model, the hero helps other people, expecting reward from his benevolent behavior. In this point, we can say that this model renovates the traditional gratitude stories. This model reflects the social reality where the people’s desire for material gain increases enormously.
In the last model, hero, whether he is Yangban or not, helps other people in need without any preconception. The hero who helps other people is not poor. He only practices the everyday ethics that people should help others in need. In this model, we are able to find the new social ethics. The beneficent character and beneficiary character are in the balanced position, so they both gain profits together. In these stories social ethics and individual desire join and are harmonious with each other.
The everyday ethics is the wisdom of life which has been obtained from the everyday experience. From their own experience of poverty, people begin to realize that they have to give material help to the poor people. This kind of ethics raises consciousness on the necessities of social distribution of materials. Finally, a type of the gratitude stories is established that insists on helping each other without any calculations. This is possible only after deconstructing the fundamental structure of the gratitude stories. Also that is the result from pursuing the new ethical attitudes for a new society.
Although the gratitude stories were created from the Yangban’s class consciousness, they were also deeply rooted in the universal consciousness of the Korean people. To explain the universal aspects of the gratitude stories is a very important issue. It should be studied in not so remote time.
