This paper investigates the use of 'ssunsoli', or bitter advice, in Korean newspaper journalism from the perspective of critical discourse analysis. The expression 'ssunsoli' was first introduced to the Korean journalism discourse in 1993 and its use began to dramatically increase between 2000 and 2001. This study aims to explainthe reasons for the sudden popularity of 'ssunsoli' in Korean journalism in terms of its discourse functions. For the study, actual uses of 'ssunsoli' are quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed as they were presented in the Chosun Ilbo and the Hankyoreh for the duration of one year from 2005 to 2006. It was found that both newspapers used an almost equal number of 'ssunsoli' in their news reporting. However, the Chosun Ilbo used this expression more freely in their news section. More significantly, these two newspapers showed that they used 'ssunsoli' for substantially different topics or agendas. Out of this research it is revealed that the two newspapers discursively exploited this expression to further their ideological agendas. It is suggested that the general public be informed of this journalistic practice and that they prepare themselves for a healthy consumption of news product. This study proves to be another instance of the usefulness of critical discourse analysis for the correct understanding of the modern world in general and the contemporary news media in particular.
