The purpose of this study is to reveal the aspects of conceptualization of tense from the viewpoint of the cognitive experientialism and folk models. There is a limit to the conceptualization of tense in dictionaries. As an alternative, the metonymic and metaphoric aspects of tense are shown in Korean on the basis of the conventionalized expressions represented mainly in many texts of modern novels. The following two characteristics of the conventionalized expressions of tense are found out. First, they are based on physiological effects, namely metonymies. Second, they are based on our daily experiences, namely metaphors. With this study, we can see that the relationship of the structure and meaning of linguistic expressions of tense is not arbitrary but coherently motivated by our embodiment and concrete experiences.
