The basic theme in Oleanna is the eternal power struggle inherent between human beings. It is analyzed in view of three ideas: The teacher- student relationship: use of specific language; gender. Within the teacher-student relationship, a professor, John, assumes his role of power and tries to hold dominance over his student, Carol. The student, however, does not remain submissive but rather discovers the teacher’s flaws and weaknesses and proceeds to threaten and dominate him. Their power struggle is reflected in the verbal behavior between them with various forms of language. The battle for power can be analyzed as the struggle between men and women. The husband, John, holds the dominance over his docile wife, Grace. The relationship between the male professor and his female student imitates gender roles in patriarchy.
