Sperber & Wilson’s relevance theory(1986) maintains that new information is relevant if it has contextual effects in some context and that each utterance is consistent with the principle of relevance. Cook(1989) contends that the ideas developed within spoken language are applicable to written discourses. Based upon these two facts, this study aims at applying the relevance theory to four cohesive collocation aspects which the researcher has found so far. To this end, we first tried to grasp the identities of the relevance theory by illustrating the concepts of relevance, contextual effect, processing effort, and context selection. Next, an attempt was made to expand the major concepts of the theory with a view to applying them later. Our final effort was given to applying the major findings of the relevance theory to four cohesive collocation aspects: (non)meronymic, metaphorical and metonymic. As a result, the relevance theory was found to be optimally applicable to the four collocation aspects. In addition, each of them was regarded as one of the linguistic efforts to be consistent with optimal relevance.
