The construction of fresh images and the obvious presentation of the objects through them have been considered the most valuable in Jung, Ji-yong’s poems. The purpose of this paper is to find out that his poems have elaborate echo of sounds, not limited only to fresh images.
The poetic diction is the final object to contain the things. Jung intends to overcome the essential alienation between the poetic diction and the things through arranging and linking the diction to the things. This is a kind of strategy to reveal verisimilitude of the objects or the things in poems. The rhythm agreeing with the things can have the power to recall the objects immediately, through which it contributes for the poetic incarnation more essentially than language aesthetic feelings.
Jung’s intentional arrangement of particular sounds is a parameter to link the different images with sounds. Through this parameter the link of images can be more intimate and the implication can enlarge the range. And his poetic dictions are arranged in the combination of some sounds and their crossing. This intentional arrangement of sounds makes the link between images intimate and the poetic diction have multiple meanings.
There are two divided worlds in his poems - the internal world represented as ‘Hometown’ and the external world as ‘Sea’- which continue to change. He shows the split between the closed self toward ‘Hometown’ and the open Other. According to this split, the type of rhythm changes. While the rhythm is static in the poem of ‘Hometown’ representing the closed self, in the one of ‘Sea’ representing open Other it is dynamic with rather irregular lines and description.
Jung’s detailed and delicate arrangement of the sounds is concerned with the quality and the quantity of sound. It shows the poet’s agony and intellectual attitude to produce the sense of rhythm in the use of the quality and quantity of poetic diction and with which represents the objects. It is out of question that he inspires our modern poetry with his concern in poetic diction. He is a unrivaled poet showing his sensitivity to poetic diction and success in its poetic incarnation in the history of Korean modern poetry.
