The poetic world of Mok-Wol Park seen in the collected poems “Eomeoni (Mother)” is something unexpected considering his earlier poems. The poems were written in his 50’s, the period that corresponds to the important part of his later life. The poetic world expressed in them is characterized by the existential time consciousness, i.e. an awareness of transience of life.
This kind of consciousness resulted from his imaginative travelling in time and space; ultimately returning to the origin of time and his hometown Kyung-sang Province. This new poetic perspective indicates thathis poetic concern has been changed from the fantastic nature to the reallife itself and further to the origin of life. Also it tells us the fact that his poetic self stopped wandering all over the country but stayed in his very home. This seems to be greatly influenced by the Korean War, but the new point of view expressed in “Eomeoni” shows that he attained an acme of his poetic imagination.
The seventy-five poems in “Eomeoni” are all about ‘mother.’ Mok-Wol Park himself excluded all these poems from his volume of self-selected poems, which signals that these poems on mother have been underestimated even by the poet himself. However, as we pointed above, they have unusual features presenting us the poet's imaginative acme, and this follows that his imaginative trip through the origin of time and his hometown finally reached one primary point, ‘Eomeoni,’ as the united form of time and space.
The image of ‘Eomeoni’(Mother) in his poems is very strongly emphasized in four ways: the first, the image of parents, the second, the image of emotion, the third, the image of narrative Nature, and the last, the image of mythic Motherhood. In this study these four aspects of‘Eomeoni’ have been discussed in detail. His poetic world reflecting these four kinds of images of mother in this volume lays a good contrast with the ones shown in another collection of his, that is “Saryukjil”, and plays a role of womb to give birth to his religious poems in his final period of creating poems.
