A poetic space in the poems by Baek Seok shows special characteristics in the poems of the 1930's. His poems are set on the room, house, hometown, Jungjoo, and Pyungbook Province, and especially in his childhood. His spacial characteristic is well described in his anthology of poems Deer. Through memory, poetic self meets with the world, aims at the transcendental space, and constantly pursues confrontation and reconciliation for his ideal. This is because he strongly perceives some space of the inner world beyond the physical space. In some sense, he views his childhood's experience of the present self as the space of 'confinement' and 'pursuit.' He notices that his childhood's poetic self is 'confined' in the physical space such as the 'house' where he was born and grew up, which means he wants to escape from the suppression by the inner world. This calls in the 'pursuit' again, and the 'pursuit' proceeds toward 'open' space. In that process, 'seeking for a way' is inevitable. Such a change of space recognition is exhibited through the poems in Deer and collaborative poems, Namhayngsicho and Hamjoosicho. His 'seeking for a way' is displayed as 'wandering ritual,' but has a spacial drive for a new breakthrough. Namhayngsicho, which is a travel poem, not only simply appreciates local scenes and manners but also is very meaningful in causing poetic transformation through spacial movement, which is the spacial movement of transcendental being. This does not aim at the past but exhibits self-identification and an eager desire for the future and world. The travel motif of Hamjoosicho, which describes an itinerary of a long 'way' from the north to the south, functions as the space for ontological, fundamental self-quest. Therefore, the spacial travel motif from the north to the south turns into a journey for self-quest, and the diversion for a new life, of course, yields poetic transformation.
