This paper surveys how Korean critics and/or poets of the 1930s introduced contemporary British poets-W. H. Auden(1907-1973), C Day Lewis(1904-1972), and Stephen Spender(1909-1995)-to the Korean literary arena during the 1930s. In Korean literary journals and newspapers published from 1934 to 1937. the Korean critics/poets frequently referred to the "Auden Generation" poets as alternatives to T. S. Eliot(1888-19065), comparing the three poets' revolutionary poetry and poetics to Eliot's conservative or even reactionary tendency embedded in his poetry and prose works. To illustrate this tendency, they used to cite the three poets' poems where the speakers yearn for the "just society" or "new world" as distinguished from Eliot's in which "a heap of broken images" are depicted without any hope for the future. With the reinforcement of fascism and its related expansion of colonialism not only in Europe but also in Asia during the period, especially in 1937 when the second Sino-Japanese War broke out. Ki-Rim Kim among others went to extremes in criticizing Eliot's reactionary poetry and politics while adopting Auden. Day Lewis, and Spender's revolutionary ones fighting against fascism within and colonialism without fascist and/or colonial nations.
