This study explores how Korean voters cognize their social cleavage structure influencing elections. Besides, this study examines whether voters’ cognition of the social cleavage structure has effects on their party selection. This study recruited residents who were eligible to vote in Seoul.
The results showed that voters’ cognition of the social cleavage structure affected their criteria on party selection. Especially, voters' cognition of the economic cleavage structure was one of the most important variables influencing their party selections. Additionally, this study found that the influence power of voters’ cognition of the economic cleavage was more than that of the regional cleavage, the generation cleavage and the ideological cleavage in selecting party.
