The aspect of Russian is a clear grammatical category that is expressed in a binary formal opposition of the perfective and the imperfective. Nonetheless, within the aspectual system many blank phenomena take place that cannot be explained with a formal approach. This derives from the fact that the verbal aspect, which has the function to express the internal temporal structure of a situation, is the grammatical category that is closely associated with lexical meanings.
This study is based on a lexical approach to the aspect by understanding what was traditionally regarded as an aspect in a narrow sense, namely as a grammatical aspect, and by understanding the aspect as a functional-semantic category, which includes all the linguistic means that are related to the expression of the internal temporal structure of a situation as an aspect, in a broad sense.
On the basis of aspectual semantic features, all the various phenomena in the world are classified into four aspectual situations. The semantic features, which become the criteria of classification, are static-dynamic property, homogeneity-heterogeneity, momentary attribute, etc.
According to these, an aspectual classification of concrete verbal lexemes has been tried, which can be the first objective of this study. This is to verify if the aspectual meaning can be expressed with only the stem of a verb, in other words, as the lexical meaning itself. From the semantic perspective, non-derivative basic verbs are targeted. In doing so, the same semantic features are used as in the classification of aspectual situations. As a result, it is proved that the lexical meanings of verbs include the aspectual features, and accordingly, verbs express the aspectual meanings with a lexical meaning itself.
As a second task, the question of whether aspectual pairs are derived or not, as well as various semantic interrelationships that appear in the aspectual pairs, are investigated according to the aspectual classes to which verbal lexemes belong. It is concluded from these findings that the meaning of aspectual opposition is essentially forecast from the lexical meanings of verbs.
The findings in this study, as above, prove that the aspect is a functional-semantic category reflecting the internal temporal structure of situations that are meant by the verbs, and that concrete lexical meanings and a grammatical aspect are one of the means of expression. Hence, the verb form that we encounter in reality can be a form that has a complex layered structure from the perspective of aspectual meaning.
