This study analyzes the effects of economic deprivation, family structure and neighborhood environment on academic attainment using data from the Korea Youth Panel Survey 2003?2005 (middle School 2). The method of analysis used was multiple regression. Our results show that economic deprivation, family structure and neighborhood environment has an influence on academic attainment. Moreover, the interactive effects of poverty and family structure in turn influences academic attainment. Additionally, it was found that economic deprivation, family structure and neighborhood environment influences academic attainment through process variables such as attachment, self?control and supervision. Findings from this study suggest that societal support for weak or vulnerable families can contribute positively to improving levels of academic attainment.
