As it is already known, commercially, it has failed. Thus I come to wonder is it really a "mission impossible" to explain this history and to recover as a film, and that's the reason why I start this thesis. The film The Uprising has the same background as the original novel-the popular uprising in Cheju at the beginning of the 20th century when the Catholic, western culture rushing in. We can see the plots of the novel and film via the analysing of the narrative.
Park Kwang-Su, as his earlier films, he is following multi-plots when he goes back in time, this observer way has developed in The Uprising.
With the eye of enlightened, learned major and the crow which is always around historical places, we can see the facts in more deeply. And it seems the very fair choice more than any of Park's earlier works.
However, the view of major and crow is the reason of lack of The Uprising heroism. But with the historical view of Park Kwang-Su and the attitude of auteurism, this two points of view are worth enough as 'History Surveying' equipment. And long take and plan sequence, his unique style, have developed for the object interpretation of history in this film.
