This paper explores a semantic analysis of the epistemic use of the modal verb would. In this paper, I criticize the previous studies on would for not having provided satisfactory accounts of the epistemic would mainly because they focus on the semantics of other uses of would than epistemic one. Noting that epistemic would is involved in the presupposition that the speaker commits to the truth of the proposition under the scope of would, I argue that the semantics of epistemic would can be treated properly in terms of the presuppositional approach. This might take an account of why epistemic would conveys the speaker's higher level of confidence in the proposition in question than epistemic must.
