The increase in agricultural productivity has caused great change in the nature of society in the 16th century Korea. But we have difficulty in explaining these changes because so far the environment of agriculture, the technology of rice culture and the agricultural productivity has not been clarified in detail. This thesis tries to explain the forms of rice culture in the areas of Seongju(星州) in the 16th century by analyzing date collected from the books, Mukjae Diary(默齊日記).
In the first place, I analyzed the environment of agriculture in the areas Seongju in the 16th Century and the rice field of Yi mun-geon. The rice field of Seongju areas had the irrigation facilities such as Jeyeon(堤堰), Cheonbang(川防), Durnbeong(둠벙), and the land of the flooded area or Gorae Non(고래 논) was set up between the fertile area.
And I analyzed the technology of rice culture in the areas of Seongju. I have clarified fertilizer, seeds, seeding, weed, and crop process. Yi mun-geon adopted direct seeding.
And I analyzed the land productivity and labor productivity attained by Yi mun-geon family. The labor cost was the main factor that they had decided to manage the method of land with the land productivity and labor productivity.
Therefore we can see the farming circumstances of the landlord and the land productivity would be the main factors that decided the method of management.
