The field of cultural studies is experiencing an unprecedented international 'boom'. It explicitly attempted to cut across diverse social and political interests and address many of the struggles within the current scene. Communication studies in Korea is no exception. Those who had studied abroad had 'imported' the discipline and put it into curriculum with a great eagerness. Since then, it is not hard to find cultural-studies-based-articles in communication research journals in Korean any longer. It is the turn to evaluate what Korean cultural studies tradition has done and to position the discipline in communication research field.
This paper grew out of a large scale of review of media studies in cultural studies done by both domestic and international scholars through media-concerned academic journals in Korean and English. In addition to those published in the journals, a number of other papers collected in single volumes were also selected for the better work. The main goal of the paper was to position 'Media Studies' in Korean tradition of cultural studies and to suggest the possibility of reorientation for the field by juxtaposing domestic works with international ones.
It was necessary for the analysis to make sub-categories into which the selected papers were put. For the categorization, the paper took the traditional way by which disciplines stake out their territories and theoretical paradigms mark their difference. Five sub-categories were collected: Media Text studies, Media Audience studies, Media Institution studies, Media-Related Discourse studies, Media and Modernity studies. Though each categogy contained at least more than a single media studies done by Korean scholars, many of them were concentrated in favor of - so called - 'revisionist' areas such as audience and text-audience studies. Korean students in cultural studies rarely paid attention to the media institutions, especially the press. Considering media students in traditional communication research field have given a great emphasis on the area, cultural studies students' are to deserve to be criticized for neglect of duty. Interesting enough, none of international studies belonged to the category of Media-Modernity studies. The category consisted of the studies on the role of mass media in the formation of modernity, the origin of modern-type media performance. It was an obviously emerging topic among Korean students.
On the basis of the evaluation, the paper suggested that cultural studies should widen its focus on such mass media phenomema as journalism, media-scape, and other media-related texts(department store, street, advertisements etc.). Repositioning cultural studies in terms of social practice was also recommended. Cultural studies students seems to be satisfied with its institutionalization and with its advance into curriculum in college. It is necessary for cultural studies to remind itself of the spirit in the earlier stage of cultural studies. Most works done by Korean students neglected to historicise and to put its results into the concrete social conjuncture. It had led cultural studies to the research for its sake. Overall, media studies in Korean cultural studies tradition need to reposition and to reorient itself for the purpose of its expansion in terms of academic, social influence and for the success in competition with traditional communication research paradigm.
