The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of swimming exercise on body composition and basic physical fitness in male college students. In order to achieve the said goal, the study selected 12 male college students and let them do swimming for 90 minutes 5 times a week for 8 weeks with exercise intensity of 60-80%HRmax. T-test was conducted by using an SPSS statistics program and the results obtained were as below.
First, it has been noted that percent body fat and fat mass of body composition were reduced significantly, but fat free mass was increased significantly.
Second, it has been shown that muscle strength, agility and flexibility of basic physical fitness were improved significantly, but there was no significant improvement in strength and power.
From the results above, it has been observed that regular swimming exercise had a positive effect on reduction of body fat, increase in fat free mass and improvement in physical fitness. Therefore, it has been believed that it would be necessary for male college students to do swimming exercise for more than 8 weeks to prevent their obesity and improve their physical fitness. Furthermore, it is expected that there should be continuous further researches on various exercise programs based on a dietary treatment.
