The oldest lacquered silver inlaid incense burner and incense case that could prove the record of History of Three Kingdoms recently went out into the world.
At a glance these materials, there was serious blue rust on the surface of works. So these works were recognized as a bronze incense burner with silver inlaid.
Silver inlaid inscriptions beneath the rim of top of the body include making year, background of making, and enshrinement place. Also inscriptions consist of 123 Chinese characters. Of all 123 characters 38characters are the old characters that was not used at present.
According to inscriptions, this incense burner was made at 1280 in order to pray for longevity of the Crown Prince and be enshrined at main building of Baekyoolsa temple(栢栗寺). A prayer of this work was Princess Jegukdaejang(濟國大長公主) who was King Choongyeol' s wife.
The very man that Princess Jegukdaejang could make this incense burner enshrine at main building of Baekyoolsa temple was the wife of a girl' s brother. There was a subsidiary record related with this content in History of Goryeo.
What we give attention to in this work is the technique of silver inlaid. The technique that was applicable to this work is not mold inlaid but plain inlaid.
Jowan(??) of inscription is not only new name about incense burner but also new materials that can prove meaning of name.
This work followed the traditional technique that was used at Unified Silla period and is applicable to lacquered silver inlaid technique.
Considering that Standing Medicine Buddha in National Gyeongju Museum handed down as relic, this work is quite within the realms of possibility.
This incense burner is valuable in that this work has making year, new name, and the oldest lacquered silver inlaid technique.
