This paper investigated the genre and literary characteristics of folk ballads focused on the works in Chungcheong district. The genre of folk ballads could be classified in the narrative genre. That’s the reason why it has a narrater that makes a progress of events directly and indirectly, events are formed with the confrontation between the self and the world. But it may show other characters according to the actualization(the oral performance). So they could be called, the typical, the lyric, the dramatic, the didactic.
Folk ballads are getting inclined to get lyric characteristics in accordance of the change of circumstances of performance. For instance, folk ballads were sung withlabour before, but they are sung with leisure or rest. Therefore singers of folk ballads sing it more emotionally compared with singing it with labour. So folk ballads becomes to get lyric characteristics.
We ought to give a careful consideration to generalize the result of this study, because I examined only works of Chungcheong district. Moreover through investigation about genre of folk ballads have to be executed. In order to get the definite result, we should expand investigation of folk ballads to the all districts and compare the existent aspects of folk ballads in districts. I look forward to succeeding the study of folk ballads more briskly.
