It was not the "Korean" who initiated the issue of 'Adoption' in modem Korean society. The issue has been positively promoted by the so-called 'Western' institutions, stemmed in Europe and the USA, or affiliated persons who have had serious concern toward the 'neglected' children with a background of various reasons. When it comes to 'adoption,' especially an adoption across blood relations, contemporary Koreans as well as the traditional ones are all thumbs up.
Korean society, built upon the tradition of the monogenetic identity and Confucian lineal piety, still holds a family structure, mainly based on blood relationships. They seem to be reluctant to adopt children who are out of their direct blood line.
In the midst of such a 'closed' tendency of society, however, there seems to be a little bit of meaningful 'change' recently. It is not difficult for us to hear the voice, raising the issue of 'Adoption for both sides'; "Give children to the parents who do not have any descendants, match parents with children who do not have any relatives." The slogan necessarily includes the adoption campaign across blood relations. The trend of change seems to be influenced by the customs of adoption as done in the "Western" world.
In some part, the "Western" way of behavior concerning adoption seems to be indebted to the teachings of the Bible. As the backbone of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the Bible freshly teaches a parent-children relationship with the meaning of a 'non-possessive' one. Though the children are born through their parental contribution, they do not belong them, in a sense of 'possession.' Parents are the devices through which God sends life to this Earth. Every parent can be counted as a kind of 'Adoptee' in the family of God.
With such a biblical teaching in mind, the writer deals with the issue of 'adoption,' especially the 'adoption in the cross-cultural background' in context of contemporary Korean society. The article includes the traditional and contemporary way of adoption in Korea. It also deals with the biblical teaching and actual cases of adoption. The western way of adoption, focusing on Northern Europe and America, is mainly reviewed. The recent theory of socio-religious analysis is used for understanding the background of 'Western behavior' for adoption.
