The article analyzes Chang-rae Lee"s novel A Gesture Life by focusing on the issue of transnational adoption. After a brief reflection on Slavoj ?i?ek"s notion of ideology as fantasy, the article sets out to read Chang-rae Lee"s novel as a portrait of transnational adoption as an ideological practice that conceals the traumatic kernel of the symbolic order; in addition, the adoptee is construed as a sublime object of ideology that promises to fulfill the most cherished desires of adoptive parents in the West. The article shows how the issue of transnational adoption is an important issue in the novel, yet it has been neglected in the previous reception. Through close reading of selected passages, the article shows how the flashbacks are important formal dimensions that emphasize the traumatic structure of the narrative. In particular, the flashback within a flashback provides an important context for the appearance of K"s ghost. It is here, in the encounter with the ghost, that the article locates the traumatic kernel of the narrative. Hata, the protagonist and unreliable narrator of the novel, is an allegory of Korean collaboration with the Japanese colonial regime. Instead of attempting to resolve the conflicts related to collaboration and national division, Hata repeats the traumatizing structure in the form of transnational adoption.
