The primary purpose of this essay is to review the historical situation of Japan and Yanagita's works on folklore through three dimensions: The notion the state and nation, the recognition of Asia, and the ideology of colonialism Secondly, this paper aims to shift the internal and structural tendency in this field toward a more external and historical one. By doing so, it will not only avoid the pitfall of idolizing Yanagita but will also contribute to develop a new perspective on Yanagita folklore.
Specifically, this article traces the overall process of Yanagita's intellectual journey: His early career when he focused on yamabito(山人) and did not advocate ikkoku-minzokugaku(一國民俗學) yet, the time when he constructed the concept of zoumin(常民), and finally, his later years when he isolated himself in the Japanese islands by abandoning the scope of comparative folklore. This will reveal the basic nature of colonialism that he possessed in his academic works.
I concluded that his ikkoku-minzokugaku aims to erase racism and promote nationalism. At the same time, basically he had a dilemma when he empowered nation-dependent folklore from the universal viewpoint of evolutionism. This dilemma finally led him to ikkoku-minzokugaku as shin-kokugaku, neo Japanese philosophy. Yet, Yanagita himself had never been injured by white racism. If he had applied his theology to Japanese colonies, he would have committed the same crime that he had blamed on the Caucasians. He was aware of this fact and this is the reason why he discarded his global folklore instead of conducting research on Korea and Taiwan. This process shows us how his fundamental mentality of colonialism has been concealed in human history.
