The aim of this study is to examine how and in what social context the Toegye school constructed and managed s?dang, a traditional elementary education institute, in its formative stage. I think Toegye's Hans?am and Gyesangs?dang are the relevant sorce with which to concrete my concern.
In this study, I found that Gyesangs?dang was not an educational institute in a rural area or institute possessed by eminent rural Neo-Confucian literati but a closed education place where highly refined academical disputes were developed. In this moment, Toegye was trying to establish the doctrine of the orthodox lineage of the Tao and Gyesangs?dang and Tosans?dang were the results of his efforts. They were all Neo-Confucian educational institute in its pure sense. Both of them played crucial roles in consolidating the emerging Neo-Confucian literati. Tosans?dang was definitely discriminated from the s?dangs constructed at Myun(面) and Li(里) or those maintained by sibs all of which were found in later period.
In addition, the education chance of Lee Ch?ng-hee's Chinams?dang was open to not only members of Chins?ng Lee family but also children of the mother's family or the wife's family. Its education quality was so high that it satisfied the academic demand of many students preparing the civil examination. Lee could manage it systematically and strengthened its financial foundation. It reveals that s?dang began to be maintained not by individuals' private donations but by the cooperative efforts of rural community. Those who led the s?dang construction movement in the 16th century at Andong area were the eminent people in that area and most of them were closely related with the families belonging to Toegye school through their intellectual interactions.
