The arrival of the modern computer had transformed most of dictionary into electronic dictionaries. In this paper, we investigate the present status of electronic dictionary, and predict the future of electronic dictionary.
Firstly, the definition and brief history of electronic dictionary were investigated and the relation between electronic dictionary and natural language processing(NLP) was explained. Next, we explore the related works of electronic dictionary development from a viewpoint of NLP. The various informations such as morphological, syntactic, semantic information is useful to analyze the natural language. Recently, there are many researches on human's semantic knowledge such as thesaurus or ontology.
Electronic dictionary is moving towards more content, more flexibility and customization, more user-friendliness, better access and more connectivity with other sources of knowledge. In the future, they gradually include more NLP component and give more information to NLP system such as information retrievals, machine translations and intelligent agents. Finally, we expect to develop many useful electronic dictionary for human and machine.
