Chinese language, which is used by the most people in any single country in the world, is known to be an important language for world politics, economics and cultural aspect-in the era of world globalization.
With this reason, Chinese education needs continuous research on the development of a Chinese education policy, improvement of the educational system, teaching methods and contents, and textbooks. Thus, this paper examines Chinese education in Korea by analysing several problem in that matter.
The early Chinese education in Korea was directed at improving students' ability to understand text rather than improve their communicative ability, which is known as a traditional teaching method. However, in today's internationalized world, it is very important for students to learn not only text based knowledge but also communication focused knowledge.
Therefore it is necessary to come up with alternative strategies for teaching Chinese language that can offer students a constructive and effective language education, which would include speaking, listening reading and writing in Chinese. Truly, speaking and listening are two important parts of language learning, however they have not been viewed as main educational focus in the early Chinese education in Korea. Since some students who studied abroad or went to China for language training show distinctive improvement in their Chinese speaking ability compared to the students who only have studied in Korea, we must pay more attention to the communicative method in teaching Chinese. For example, a Chinese course varies several different classes such as translation of a long Chinese article, understanding of Chinese grammar, composition, and conversation with a native teachers.
