This study examined changes in recent young adults novels that try to configure young adults’ life and culture without attaching to didacticism. Lim Tae-hee’s “Catch a Mouse” deals with young adults’ pregnancy and abortion. Shin Yeo-rang’s “Hwarani” configures delinquent young adults’ life through the reportage technique. The two works show a material?oriented limitation as they are excessively dependent on unconventional materials.
Shin Yeo-rang’s “Mongus Crew” describes B-boys’ joys and sorrows. It is characterized by precise description based on detailed data collection. As it is focused on conflicts between the brothers, the image of B-boys is faded down. Kim Ryo-ryeong’s “Wandeuki” tells the story of the hero who is from a multicultural family and grows through kick boxing. It shows the characteristic of ‘genre literature’ like traditional school literature or romance literature. It has the limitation that the focus is blurred by excessive consideration of political correctness.
Each of these works has its own weak point, but we can expect a new trend of young adults novel in that they are conscious of young readers’ viewpoint.
