The current study examined cultural characteristics through studying idiomatic metaphorical expressions of Chinese language. This study is based on a theory of cognitive linguistics in which thoughts and cognition about the world are reflected in language.
When discussing the relationship between metaphors and culture, the most essential one is 'vehicle'. Although they are the same metaphors, they may contain different meanings according to the difference in linguistic culture. On the contrary, cultural difference can be analogized through examining the origin of specific metaphorical meanings.
The study examined metaphorical meanings of several Chinese metaphorical expressions such as '水water', '火fire', '月moon', etc. by connecting with the theory of yin-yang, one of traditional ideology of China.
This kind of linguistic approach to a correlation between language and culture is expected to sugguest objective and scientific evidence for a vague and intuitional assumption about a close connection between the two.
