The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and styles of the rhythms of traditional children's songs.
The rhythm of traditional children' song itself consists of such elements as sobak, bak, daegang bak and time. These elements correspond to chose of the Korean language, syllable, word and phrase. This suggests thar children's songs may be more natural if they are composed with some linguistic and musical rhythm.
Out of the above traditional elements, sobak can be classified into double sobak, triple sobak and han sobak. This classification plays an important role in discriminating between different rhythms.
Traditional songs fur children are based on quardruple, quintuple, sextuple and peculiar times. Using such different times fur the traditional songs indicates thar those songs aim to reflect children's emotions by means of those rimes-based rhythms and help children express themselves with such rhythms as well as words and motions.
Rhythms of traditional children's songs were compared with those of such songs contained in elementary musical texts whose genre was Korean classical music. The comparison showed thar rhythms instructed in current music education are very limited in style.
Rhythms of traditional children's songs represent those that were formed and enjoyed by children who lived in a traditional society. This means that researching such traditional rhythms could help determine the archetype of Korean music and musical qualities inherent in children.
