Post-democracy and existentialism that appeared in the early works of Oe were heavily influenced by Sartre. One of those works is a novel, 'Seventeen'. In order to figure out how Oe put philosophical thoughts inherited from Sartre in place in his literature, the terms adopted from Sartre's existentialism ought to be understood first.
Sartre divides existence in the universe into two categories, i.e., the in-itself(en-soi) and the for-itself(pour-soi). The en-soi is a perfect and complete being in itself with no further potential. On the other hand, pour-soi is nothingness which is human existence. Nothingness has unlimited potential with the ability to choose to shape itself. Human beings, due to their infinite freedom and their consequent responsibilities, suffer from extreme anxiety. To escape from that, human beings indulge in self-deception. Self-deception is a denial that he is a pour-soi existence with a will and freedom, and it is a subsequent attempt to turn himself into a en-soi, that is, a thing without consciousness. In 'Seventeen', the main character erases his own consciousness. He indulges in self-deception wherein he is a valiant rightist who acts according to the will of the emperor. The main character, a seventeen-year old boy, does not find an environment that can affirm his existence. A vague fear about 'nothingness of human existence' is a fear about the future into which he has to throw himself, and it is manifested in a sexual way as masturbation. For a seventeen year-old boy brimming with the energy of life, that power is supposed to manifest itself as proactive political acts such as social participation in 'engagement', but as it was stagnant in the human condition of self-deception, it gets to have explosive power.
The boy filles his space of nothingness with the emperor, a powerful being of the symbolic. The fact that nothingness of existence has been filled means that it has become a filled en-soi, which in turn indicates the demise of consciousness.
The main character of 'Seventeen' protects his fragile existence with the mantle of the right wing, and exerts linguistic power as he enters into the symbolic as a political human being. However, he himself within the protection of the right wing is still a sexual being.
