In this presentation I will reflect on the difficulties to interpret the deep cultural meanings of rice for Asian peoples to a Western museum audience. By providing insight into why a California museum would go through a lengthy and expensive process to conduct original research on Asian rice cultures (1998-2003), I will comment on many 'rice encounters' I experienced while researching rice in Korea. Collecting rice narratives and purchasing material culture objects of Korean rice, I found both traditional cycles and modem representations of life with rice mutually complementing each other for Koreans to identify with. Why did a California museum decide to display Asian rice in its premises and then send it on a tour around the country? While the exhibition "The Art of Rice: Spirit and Sustenance in Asia" by the UCLA Fowler Museum (2003-04/05) might have appeared as a celebration but also a bit as a peculiarity to many Asian and Asian American visitors, it helped to make transparent some of the disconnects with food that Western societies developed during the past six decades or so. Research narratives and the presentation of the final version of this rice story effectively communicated to visitors that there is much meaning in maintaining a close physical, spiritual, and nutritional relationship with one's food.
