The modernist movements of the 1950s in Korea are discussed with focus on the activities of Hubangi coterie members, especially Kim Kyung-rin. Kim Kyung-rin provided an important feature in Korean modernism of the 1950s by continuing to experiment with the modernist style while joining coterie groups from Shin Siron (New Poetics) to Hubangi. His discussion about modernity starts from the inflow of modern civilization represented by machines and materials and from the resulting fear and despair. The Japanese colonial rule and the inflow of modern civilization after the nation's independence from Japan brought fear and despair to people but, at the same time, raised the urgent need to develop a new understanding of modernity. Kim argued that stereotypical ideas should be reformed along with the problems of expression in modern poetry, reacting against traditional poetry, especially the lytic poems of Cheongnok-pa poets. As a result, he placed emphasis on the use of novel poetic words based on a color sensation, the creation of new language by an unconventional combination of languages, the adoption of geometric poetic diction, and the control of extreme feelings. Based on such poetics, his poems reveal a tough of urban senses, a preference of graphic images, and a combination of new languages. It should be indicated that there was a certain limit to his understanding of modernity, but having attempted to present a new understanding of modernity whileleading the modernism of the 1950s, his poems have great significance in that they played a bridge role in the history of modernist poetry running from 1930s to 1950s.
